Shaheed Sarwan Dass
|
Shaheed Sarwan Dass was born on June 29th, 1935 in a poor family of Late Sh. Ram Asra as father and Late Smt. Nami as mother in Village Kittna, Tehsil Garshankar, Distt Hoshiarpur, Punjab. His birth place in today's date looks like:(as shown in pictures).(We are planning to erect Hot Springs Martyr Memorial at his birth place in near future) .His nephew Amarjit Singh is pointing to his birth place.
There used to be only one room , where Sarwan Dass stayed with his family.During the heavy floods in Punjab in year 1988 the roof fell down, the only thing his mother was worried about was an old trunk(metal suitcase) that she had kept very safely for a long period. And today I came to know why that trunk was so priceless.I have come across his childhood friends to know about him, everyone mentioned him to be handsome, tall, young and strong.

Father and Mother(Photo - March 1992)
He did his primary school education from village Govt. Primary School Kittna (primary school used to be till 4th class)
|
Afterward he joined Govt. High School Mahal Gallah to complete his Matriculation. As parents were so poor they couldn't even afford him a pair of shoes to go to school
which was approx 10-12km from his village, no proper uniform and used to walk barefoot wether it been the hottest summer of June-July or the coldest
winter of Dec-Jan.Which seems to be that he is being prepared for a big task for his country so that he should be strong enough to hold either hottest
or coldest weather or in other words his training even started before he joined the CRPF.
He was married to Smt. Nasib kaur of Mola Wahadpur around 1958. After two months of his vacation period he joined back to his team.
He wrote a letter addressed (May 25th 1958) to his father Sh. Ram Asra mentioning not to worry about anything and he will send more money so that his younger brother should study hard. (His younger brother Sh. Pargan Singh -nowadays staying with his two sons Santokh Singh and Inderjit Singh in USA).
After reaching at leh he wrote another letter of his well being and also mentioning that will be back after eight months ( in around august 1959).
On Oct 21st 1959 at Hot Springs alongwith his other battalion members ( a team of 20 jawans under the command of DSP Karam Singh) was attacked by the chinese army.
While fighting for his country Shaheed Sarwan Dass laid his life among 10 other jawans (3 from 1st BN, 2 from 2nd BN and 5 from 3rd BN). Although on Oct 22nd ,1959 the news of the great sacrifice of Shaheed Sarwan Dass was in the media but his family members were totally unaware of the whole incidents. After about 2 weeks his family in village kittna recieved a telegram about the martydom of their son. The whole family and the village were in total shock. After hearing the news of their son's death his father (Sh. Ram Asra ) and mother (Smt. Nami) got such a mental shock that they were not able forgot this news till the last breadth of their lives.
The worst part of the incident was that they never got the dead body of their son. Everyday believing that Shaheed Sawan Dass their son will be back and will knock at the door of their home. But that never happened.
His father took last breadth of his life on Feb 16, 1996 while his mother on May 29th , 1999.
Today I came to know that why my grandfather used to say( when we as kids used to fight or play fighting game) that if you want to fight " Je Larna Hain Ta Cheen De Baader te Ja Ke Lahro"( means if you want to fight go the China border).
About three months later or so the family members of Shaheed Sarwan Dass was again in big shock as the policemen from CRPF came to Village Kittna to handover the following belongings of Shaheed Sarwan Dass to his family. |

A Trunk ( metal suitcase) where he used to keep his stuff, a "THAAL" the stainless plate used to serve his dinner in, the belts
used to wear around his waist while serving his country. It took us around 56 years to realise that he is not dead but still alive in the hearts of all countrymen.
WE WILL PASS AWAY AND MAY NOT BE REMEMBERED BUT HE AND HIS SACRIFICE WILL BE SALUTED ALWAYS, AS IS BEING DONE BY ALL THE INDIAN POLICE FORCES ON OCT 21ST OF EVERY YEAR.
